Soap Properties and "Recommended Ranges"

Turtle Bees uses www.lyecalc.com to calculate the right levels of oils and lye/distilled water. Each oil has a different lye requirement and we'll never blindly swap one out for another without checking with the calculator.  For each recipe, we strive to keep the ranges in the recommended areas. In some cases, we'll sacrifice the longevity if we're able to hit the mark on the others...these may appear to melt a touch faster in the shower than others as well. Our soap is intended to be enjoyed and not act as a display piece....so use it up!

The calculator does not take into consideration any other additives (e.g. vitamin e oil).

**We'll post a screen shot from Lyecalc for every bar we sell, that way it'll give you an idea of what to expect out of your soap.**

The below information was taken straight from the Lye Calc page, so all credit is theirs!

Recommended Ranges

You don't need to reach the gray ranges in the LyeCalc.com chart. A recommended range is simply a range which many soap makers have found useful when making soap when it comes to the final bar/batch of soap. A mono soap may look terrible on this chart, but with the correct superfat, be a nice bar of soap.

Hardness

The hardness or density of your soap. Higher number means harder.

Long Life (Longevity)

How long the soap bar with last. Higher number is longer life.

Conditioning

The Emolient quality of the soap. Emolients help skin stay moisturized and soft.

Bubbly

The bubble/foamy quality of the lather. A higher number means a less creamy, more foamy lather.

Creamy

The creamy quality of the lather. A higher number means a more creamy, less foamy lather.

Cleansing

How much oil the soap will remove. A higher number is more cleansing. Higher numbers are more cleansing but can also dry your skin.

INS

A score developed which combines SAP and Iodine values to predict a soap\'s qualities. A score of 136-170 is conidered acceptable. A score of 160 is ideal.

Iodine

Lower number makes a harder, less conditioning bar of soap. Higher number is a softer, more conditioning bar.
